The Task
Find a unique, purely plant-based recipe from a historical source—be it a cookbook, magazine, or other written document published before 1930. Present it in a well-researched and creatively prepared written submission.
Conditions of Participation
The recipe must be purely plant-based (no animal products of any kind).
The source must have been published before 1930—this includes historical cookbooks, magazines, or other written documents.
You may combine multiple recipes from a single source to create a meaningful dish.
The submission must be clear and carefully designed and include precise citation of the source (including author, title, year of publication, and page number, if applicable).
Please also include a brief explanation of the source and its historical context.
How to earn extra points
Increase your chances of winning by considering these:
💎 High-quality proteins: Find a recipe based on high-quality proteins, including a compete amino-acid profile, such as soy.
💎 Original edition of the source: Include a photo or a copy of the first edition of the book.
💎 Poetic contribution: Include a short poem or literary text inspired by the recipe or its history, or present the recipe itself as a poem.
💎 Nutritional advice: Provide specific nutritional information about the dish (e.g., health benefits, allergens). You’ll earn even more points if this information is already mentioned in the historical source.
💎 Rare ingredient: Use an unusual or forgotten ingredient that is rarely found in kitchens today but still exists.
💎 Special era: Choose a recipe from a particular historical era – e.g., the Middle Ages. E.g., the Roman Empire, ancient Persia, or Imperial China.
💎 Historical name for „alternative proteins“: Invent a creative historical name for „alternative proteins“ that fits the time and cultural context of your recipe.
